Abstinent Pumpkin Spice Latte

Celebrate The Season AND Stay In Your Recovery

Pumpkin spice season is here, and we are making it our way!

This homemade pumpkin spice inspired latte brings together warm cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and a touch of clove in freshly brewed coffee or fresh espresso for that cozy fall flavor we all know and love, without relying on a premade, sweetened mix.

For those of us in recovery, creating new traditions can be part of the joy. We don’t have to re-create the drinks, rituals, or food-centered moments from the past to enjoy the season. Sometimes, a warm mug, a favorite sweater, and a few minutes to slow down are enough to make a new fall memory.

This latte is one of those little moments: cozy, flavorful, and created for the life we’re building in abstinence.

Description

This cozy homemade pumpkin spice-inspired latte brings all those warm fall spices to your mug without asking us to go back to old habits. It’s a new little tradition for a life we’re building in recovery.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup strong coffee
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened milk
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • tiny pinch ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • OPTIONAL: sprinkle of cinnamon for the top

Instructions

  1. Set up your drip coffee or french press for brewing; into the coffee grounds, add all of the spices. Brew your coffee.
  2. Add cold milk to your milk frother. Add vanilla. Froth the milk until thick and foamy.
  3. If you don’t have a milk frother, add milk to a small saucepan; whisk over low heat until hot and steamy.
  4. Pour the coffee into your mug. Add the warm, frothy milk. Sprinkle with cinnamon on top and enjoy your abstinent beverage!

Notes

For a stronger pumpkin spice flavor, increase the cinnamon and ginger slightly.

In lieu of each spice, you can use pumpkin pie spice.
