Sandwiches Are On The Menu

Easy Abstinent Wraps You’ll Actually Crave

There is something comforting about holding a sandwich in your hands.

Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s the convenience. Maybe its the simple joy of sitting outside on a sunny afternoon with lunch in one hand and a good conversation with the other.

If you’ve entered food addiction recovery, you may have wondered if sandwiches are one of those foods you’ll have to say goodbye to forever.

Here’s the good news:

You don’t have to give up the experience. You simply get to reinvent it!

The Abstinent Sandwich Wrap

One of my favorite recovery meals is what I call an abstinent sandwich wrap. It has everything I loved about sandwiches before recovery: layers of flavor, the satisfying bite, the portability, but it’s built on ingredients that support my abstinence instead of triggering cravings, reviving food noise, or stoking that old food obsession.

The secret is using an Ezekiel tortilla instead of traditional bread.

Why Ezekiel Tortillas?

Unlike traditional flour tortillas, Ezekiel tortillas are made from sprouted grains and legumes. They contain no refined flour, making them a great fit for an abstinent food plan.

Ezekiel tortillas also have zero added sugar or sweeteners, and they contain more protein and fiber than a typical flour tortilla.

They perform like a regular tortilla, and hold fillings well. They can be cooked to crispy perfection, or when warmed they become pliable.

Wrap Basics

To make your sandwich wrap, start by laying your tortilla flat on a cutting board. Using a knife, cut one slit from the middle to the outer edge.

Warm the tortilla just enough to make it pliable. A few seconds in the microwave works beautifully, but you can also warm it in a dry skillet or pop it in the air fryer for a minute.

Now comes the fun part.

Measure your ingredients according to your food plan, then fill three of the four “sections of your tortilla. Add your protein, cheese if it’s part of your food plan, plenty of fresh veggies, and a healthy fat like avocado, mayonnaise, or even our abstinent Ranch dressing. Then simply fold each section over the next until you’ve created a neat little triangle that’s packed with flavor in every bite.

Limitless Variations

It feels like something you’d order at your favorite sandwich shop, except every ingredient was chosen intentionally to support your recovery.

One of the things I love most about these wraps is that they NEVER get boring.

If you’re craving something warm and hearty, turn it into a recovery Philly cheesesteak with sliced leftover steak, grilled onions, sautéed mushrooms, roasted bell peppers, and melted cheese.

Feeling like something cool and refreshing? Mix up a measured tuna, chicken, or egg salad and add crisp lettuce for a satisfying wrap that tastes like summer.

Want something that reminds you of a classic BLT? Layer smoked turkey breast with crisp turkey bacon, creamy avocado, lettuce, and juicy tomato. It checks every box without compromising your abstinence.

Grilling a burger? Grill the meat as usual, and then add your burger accompaniments. Lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard, and cheese. Then, drizzle with our burger sauce. Perfection!

Leftovers & Flavors

Got leftovers? A wrap can be a fantastic vehicle to use up leftover proteins. Grilled chicken with coleslaw is fantastic in a wrap.

Leftover meatballs sliced, with cheese, and either air-fried or warmed in a skillet until the cheese is melty and the tortilla is a browned is divine.

And don’t just stop there.

This is where you can really let your creativity shine: Add sliced pickles, relish, pepperoncini, banana, or jalapeno peppers, fresh herbs, tangy sauerkraut, roasted peppers, spicy mustard, hot sauce, or your favorite abstinent aioli. Every little addition changes the personality of the sandwich, making it feel like an entirely new meal.

The possibilities really are endless!

Quick, Portable, & Convenient

One of the biggest gifts of recovery is realizing we are not deprived. We are not restricted.

We’re discovering new ways to enjoy food that actually nourishes us.

These wraps have become one of my favorite grab-and-go quick meals because they travel well.

Pack one for work, road trips, long flights, picnics, afternoons at the beach, hikes, camping weekends, or a day at the park. They tuck perfectly into a lunch bag and are just as delicious hours later.

A wrap is also my go-to dinner when I’m home alone and don’t feel like cooking.

Sometimes the simplest meals are exactly what we need.

On The Side

Instead of pairing your sandwich that standard bag of chips, fill your plate with colorful vegetable crudites. Baby carrots, sliced colorful bell peppers, snap peas, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, radishes, broccoli or cauliflower.

Get some crunch and stay on your food plan.

Visually, it’s beautiful. Nutritionally, it’s a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. And, you get that crunch you’re looking for alongside your wrap.

Here’s one of my favorite little tricks:

Sprinkle your fresh vegetables with a pinch of chunky sea salt.

It’s such a tiny touch, but somehow elevates a plate of fresh, crisp vegetables to feel just a little more special.

Add a measured serving of abstinent ranch dressing if it’s part of your food plan, and suddenly you’ve created a meal that’s colorful, satisfying, crunchy, nourishing, and completely abstinent. Win-win!

Food Freedom

Food addiction recovery is about finding freedom with food.

It’s about discovering that the foods we once thought we couldn’t live without can often be re-created in ways that support our health instead of sabotaging it.

You absolutely can enjoy sandwiches.

You can still pack portable lunches.

You can still head to the beach or the park with your favorite handheld meal.

You can still gather with friends for a picnic.

Recovery is not restrictive or smaller than your old life. In so many ways, recovery brings freedom and creates a bigger life.

And sometimes, all it takes is one delicious wrap to remind you that abstinence can be incredibly yummy and satisfying.

Recovery never tasted so good!

  • In what areas of my life do I still think in terms of deprivation or restriction instead of possibility?
