A Fresh and Flavorful Recovery-Friendly Dinner
There are some meals that feel like summer on a plate, and these Salmon Tacos are exactly that.
If you’re anything like me, there comes a point in recovery when your tired of the same rotation of meals.
While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping things simple, sometimes it’s just fun to shake things up without compromising your abstinence.
That’s where these salmon tacos come in.
The Good Stuff
They have everything I love in a recovery-friendly meal: protein, healthy fat, veggies, and flavor. Best of all, they feel a little special without requiring hours in the kitchen.
Soft or crispy corn tortillas, flaky salmon that’s either grilled, roasted, or air fried to perfection, and a creamy Mexican-inspired slaw piled high on top. Add slices of ripe avocado and a light drizzle of sour cream if your food plan allows, and you’ve got a dinner that feels restaurant worthy while still fitting beautifully into an abstinent food plan.
Why These Abstinent Tacos Work So Well
One of the biggest misconceptions about food addiction recovery is that abstinent food has to be boring. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Recovery is not about punishment. It’s about nourishment.
When we learn to prepare meals that are satisfying, flavorful, and supportive of our recovery, we begin to build a new relationship with food. A relationship with food rooted in care rather than chaos. These salmon tacos check all the boxes:
- Salmon provides high-quality protein and necessary heart healthy fats that help support overall wellness.
- The corn tortillas add texture, whether you air fry them to be crispy, or simply warm them to be soft. Crispy corn tortillas can make the meal feel fun and satisfying.
- The elote-inspired slaw brings freshness, crunch, and a creamy tangy flavor that perfectly complements the salmon.
- The avocado contributes to the healthy fats that increase satiety and make the meal even more satisfying.
Together, these simple ingredients create a meal that feels indulgent while supporting your recovery goals.
The Secret Is The Elote-Inspired Slaw
If you’ve never had Mexican street corn, also known as elote, you’re in for a treat.
Traditional elote combines roasted corn, creamy dressing, lime, and spices to create a flavor explosion that’s sweet, savory, tangy, and slightly smoky at the same time. For this recipe, we take those same familiar flavor inspirations and turn them into a crunchy coleslaw.
The slaw adds freshness and balance to the richness of the salmon. Every bite delivers a combination of corn tortilla, flaky fish, creamy avocado, and the crunchy vegetables.
It’s the kind of meal that keeps you coming back for another bite, not because you are chasing food, but because every ingredient has a purpose and works together beautifully.
Recovery Is About Freedom From Food Chaos
One of the gifts of abstinence is discovering that food can simply be food.
It’s not a reward. It’s not entertainment. It’s not an escape. It can simply be nourishment that supports the life you’re building.
Meals like these salmon tacos remind me that recovery isn’t about restriction. It’s about freedom.
Freedom from obsession. Freedom from food noise. Freedom to enjoy a delicious meal, feel satisfied, and move on with my day.
That’s a gift I will never take for granted.
