Crispy Tofu

Description
Make perfectly crispy tofu every time without flour or frying. This Abstinent Kitchen staple is high-protein, sugar-free, flour-free, and ideal for food addiction recovery. Simple ingredients, huge flavor, and satisfying crunch.
Ingredients
- 1 block extra firm tofu, pressed
- 2 Tbsp. nutritional yeast
- 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 Tbsp tamari, reduced sodium
- 2–4 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
- 1 thumb sized knob of fresh ginger, minced
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 1/4 cup tamari, reduced sodium
- 1 Tbsp sambal oeleck chili paste
- 2 tsp. toasted sesame oil
- 2 mandarin oranges, juiced and zested
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1/2 tsp sesame seeds
Instructions
TOFU:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Dice the tofu into cubes roughly 1/2 inch. Add to a large bowl.
- Add nutritional yeast and spices; mix well until the tofu is coated evenly.
- Drizzle the rice vinegar and tamari over the tofu mixture; toss to coat.
- Add tofu to a greased or parchment paper covered baking pan; bake 15-18 minutes, then flip the tofu cubes and bake an additional 15-18 minutes, until browned and crispy.
- Can be eaten as is, or coated in garlic ginger sauce (see below).
SAUCE:
- Heat oil in a small saucepan. Stir-fry the garlic and ginger for about 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant.
- Add remaining ingredients and stir until warmed through.
- When tofu is cooked, pour warm sauce over the crispy tofu, tossing to coat. Serve immediately.
- Store tofu and sauce separately, if storing leftovers.
Notes
Serve over fresh greens, chopped fresh veggies, and brown rice.
Top with green onions and cilantro.
